Jourdie Ross was born and raised in Southern California by an artist mother and architect father. Observing and expressing the world through images has supported and informed her life from an early age. She holds a degree in Interdisciplinary Arts & Letters from Prescott College, and has studied painting with working artists in the United States, France, New Zealand, and Ghana. She continues to learn every day and hopes to do so ad infinitum.
My paintings explore abstraction as a language. I am interested in how visual gestures–this curve of a line, that angle of a palette stroke–can be arranged to interact and express emotion and sensation. I employ a variety of media and surfaces to create diverse textures and qualities of light and depth. These include acrylic paint, ink, chalk pastel, and weathered, unprimed canvas or jute. I like these materials for their immediacy and ability to lend a tactile quality to the work, engaging the viewer on a kinesthetic as well as a visual level. I strive to create images that evoke instants of joy, fear, and longing. At times, I incorporate figurative imagery into my work to make specific references, especially to the female form, the natural world, and the domestic setting; the emphasis on gesture remains. My paintings are meant to feel familiar yet ephemeral, like a scent that you recognize but cannot place.
